Farage: Ukip is now Britain's third party

The leader of Ukip, Nigel Farage, has claimed that his party has now displaced the Liberal Democrats as the "third force" in British politics after it performed strongly in three byelections.

In the party's strongest showing in a Westminster byelection, Ukip secured 21.79% of the vote in Rotherham, claiming second place behind Labour, which won with 46.25%. The Lib Dems trailed in eighth place on 2.11%.

Labour scored a hat-trick of comfortable victories in the three byelections held in its safe seats of Rotherham, Middlesbrough and Croydon North.

Leveson: Where does it leave the internet?

With only a few pages of the Leveson Inquiry devoted to internet regulation, was Lord Justice Leveson right to avoid the issue?

Amid Lord Justice Leveson's 2,000 page report into the culture, practice and ethics of the press were around a dozen pages dealing with the internet.

After describing the internet as an "ethical vacuum", some have questioned the wisdom of bringing more regulation to the press and not the wider internet, although any publisher could sign up to the new legislation-backed self regulator that he envisages.

Lord Justice Leveson has also been criticised for his attitude towards new media.

Police are carrying out toxicology tests on the body of a Russian businessman who was providing evidence about alleged money laundering after he was found dead outside his home in Surrey.

Alexander Perepilichny, 44, was helping Swiss authorities investigate a $230m (£144m) money laundering scheme in Russia when he suddenly collapsed in Weybridge, on November 10.

More than two weeks later, the cause of his death has still not been established and it is still being treated as "unexplained".

Anonymous declares Internet war on Syria

Global hacking network Anonymous said it will shut down Syrian government websites around the world in response to a countrywide Internet blackout believed to be aimed at silencing the opposition to President Bashar al-Assad.

Syria was plunged into communication darkness on Thursday when Internet connectivity stopped at midday. Land lines and mobile phones networks were also seriously disrupted.

The Syrian government said "terrorists" had attacked Internet lines but the opposition and human rights groups suspect it to be the work of the authorities.

Exorcism Hotline: Demand Swamps Milan Priests

The Roman Catholic Church has doubled the number of exorcists in Milan and set up a hotline to cope with what it says is growing demand for devil-busting priests in Italy's largest diocese.

Mons Angelo Mascheroni, the Milan diocese's auxiliary bishop and chief exorcist, says the number of requests has doubled.

"We receive a lot of requests for names, addresses and phone numbers," he told the Milan church's website. "That's why we have set up a switchboard in our (offices)."

The hotline, which is open for a few hours in the afternoon from Monday to Friday, refers callers to priests in their area, he said.

The number of exorcists in Milan has gone from six to 12.

Four tank cars were reportedly dumped into Mantua Creek. At least 18 contractors working in the area have complained of breathing problems.

NAURU 'IN MELTDOWN' AS HUNGER STRIKER EVACUATED, AUSTRALIA

An Iranian asylum seeker who has been on a hunger strike for 50 days in detention on Nauru has been evacuated to an undisclosed hospital on the Australian mainland.

Supporters say the man, known as Omid, began the hunger strike as a protest against the lack of information on how long his processing would take.

Refugee advocate Pamela Curr says she fears Omid is at risk of organ failure.

A statement from the Department of Immigration says he "will be returned to the Nauru Regional Processing Centre as soon as he is deemed medically fit to travel".

Polar Ice Sheets Melting Faster Than Before

The planet's two largest ice sheets are melting three times faster today than they were in the 1990s, according to a new study.

The most accurate analysis of satellite measurements to date showed that the Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets have lost four trillion tons of ice since 1992.

The melt water has added 11.1mm to global sea levels.

But the scientists warned that the rate of ice loss is accelerating. Figures published in the journal Science show that melting ice now adds 0.95mm a year to sea levels, compared to 0.27mm in the 1990s.

Mercury: Nasa 'Discovers Ice' On Planet

Scientists believe they have found ice inside craters near Mercury's poles, which they say could reveal more about the building blocks for life on other planets.

Nasa researchers suspect the ice and other organic material accumulated in the shadowed areas of craters at the poles after comets and asteroids delivered the material to Mercury's surface.

Nasa's Cassini spacecraft has captured dramatic images of rolling storm clouds on Saturn.

The pictures were obtained while the spacecraft was "travelling the Saturnian system in a set of inclined, or tilted, orbits that give mission scientists a vertigo-inducing view of Saturn's polar regions," Nasa said.

The results show storm clouds and a swirling vortex at the centre of Saturn's north polar hexagon.

Chinese man Lu Zhengai blows life savings on ark to escape Apocalypse

Lu Zhengai is so scared by the Mayan apocalypse, that’s he’s spent all his money - $160,000 - on building his very own Noah’s Ark.

The barely sea worthy boat, which he claims will save him and his family when flood waters destroy his house, was designed by Lu himself, measures 65 feet and will weigh 80 tons when finished, according to Chinese media.

Land lubber Lu, who lives in the Xinjiang Uyghur autonomous region of China – thousands of miles from the sea, began building the boat out of fear for the “doomsday” floods, predicted by the Maya calendar for December 21, 2012.

Added thoughts:
I'm not sure what the cheering is for, since a) it merely struck the HIND and didn't shoot it down, and b) it's a Soviet HIND, which basically laughs at most American missile technology thrown at it. More disturbing is that the "rebels" (most likely Western / Israeli mercenaries combined with real terrorist elements) now have these kinds of weapons at their disposal. A hit on an airliner would definitely not result in a similar bounce-off.

Gaza is nearly fully rearmed, the tunnels are being rebuilt, Iran now actively sends its people to the strip, and other countries, such as Egypt and Turkey, are more glad than ever to invest there. Hamas even learned how to overwhelm the Iron Dome defense system, something that now puts many Israelis in peril. Any show of force will likely never cow Iran, either, since Iran, unlike Israel, has actually gone through a real decade-long war, not just a series of Western-backed skirmishes with opponents overwhelmed from the very start. However, perhaps this engagement did provide a valuable lesson: now that the Gazan embargo is lifted a tad, more investment will pour in. More investment will lead to better lives. Better lives eschew war. One day Israel will hopefully realize that freedom, and not bombs, is what puts an end to conflict. As was learned with the USSR, the best way to kill a vicious idea is with sunshine.

Egypt: Major Protest Against President Morsi

More than 200,000 people packed Cairo's Tahrir Square to protest against Egypt's president Mohamed Morsi's new 'pharoah' powers.

They accused the Islamist leader of seeking to impose a new era of autocracy after he issued a decree that expanded his powers and barred court challenges to his decisions.

The demonstration in the iconic plaza was as large as some of the protests during last year's uprising that drove ex-president Hosni Mubarak from power.

VAT May Have To Rise To 25% and Austerity till 2018, Warns IFS

Chancellor George Osborne may have to hike VAT to 25% as he continues his battle to restore Britain's economic health, analysts have suggested.

The Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) warned struggling Britons could face yet more spending cuts and tax rises because of weaker economic growth and lower tax revenues.

If these problems are permanent, the Chancellor will need to plug a £23bn black hole if he is to meet his financial targets by 2018, according to the respected think tank.

Achieving this from tax hikes alone would be "roughly equivalent to increasing the main rate of VAT from 20% to 25%", the IFS said.

Deluged homeowners' fury at failure of £1.7m state-of-the-art defences which they celebrated with an 'end of flooding party'

Homeowners were today trying to repair the damage to their homes after a £1.7milllion flood defence system failed during torrential rain this weekend.

Families in Kempsey, Worcestershire, had not taken action to protect their homes because they believed they were protected by the state of the art pumps - and had even staged a party to celebrate the installation.

In fact, the devastation was worse than it had ever been in floods before the system was installed.

Supreme court revives challenge to Obama health law

The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday revived a challenge to President Barack Obama's healthcare reforms, allowing a Christian college to pursue litigation raising First Amendment objections to a law that the court mostly upheld in June.

Liberty University, based in Lynchburg, Virginia, had challenged both the individual mandate, which required all people to obtain insurance by 2014 or pay a penalty, and a separate mandate requiring large employers to provide coverage for workers.

Outrage over 'tagged' Saudi women

When word started spreading last week that Saudi women -- already some of the most oppressed and restricted in the world -- were being monitored electronically as they left the country, activists were quick to express their outrage.

"It's very shameful," said Manal Al-Sharif, who became an icon of female empowerment in 2011 after defying the conservative kingdom's driving ban and encouraging other Saudi women to do the same.

Al-Sharif was one of the first prominent Saudis to start tweeting about the electronic monitoring issue -- describing the shock experienced by a couple she knew after the husband received a text message alerting him his wife had left Saudi Arabia, even though they were traveling out of the country together.

Euro zone to seek Greek aid deal without write-off

Euro zone finance ministers and the International Monetary Fund began their third attempt in as many weeks to release emergency aid for Greece on Monday, with policymakers saying a write-down of Greek debt is off the table for now.

Greek Finance Minister Yannis Stournaras voiced confidence the ministers would finally reach a deal after Greece had fulfilled it's part of the deal by enacting tough austerity measures and economic reforms.

"I'm certain we will find a mutually beneficial solution today," he said on arrival for what was set to be another marathon meeting.

Second Fire At Bangladeshi Clothing Factory

There has been a second fire at a multi-storey clothes factory in Dhaka, just two days after over 100 people were killed in a blaze at another factory in the Bangladeshi capital.

The fire at the 11-storey building, housing three garment factories, in the suburb of Uttara sparked fresh scenes of panic as workers rushed to safety.

It caused widespread damage but there were no reports of deaths, with employees managing to escape to an adjacent building.

Torrential Rain Hits Northern England

North East England and North Wales are braced for flooding after the band of heavy rain that swamped southern England moved north.

There are just over 200 flood warnings in place across the country and nearly 300 less serious flood alerts, following a weekend of almost non-stop pouring rain left at least 800 homes swamped with water.

Parts of South West England were particularly badly hit, now people in the North East and North Wales are preparing for possible flooding.
